Wegovy weight loss tablets have now been approved in the UK. Read our latest blog to find out how they work and how they compare with weekly Wegovy injections.

Wegovy is a popular weight loss injection that’s sold through the weight loss clinic here at the pharmacy or dispensed to customers who are prescribed the medication on the NHS.

Until June of this year (2026), Wegovy was only available as an injectable. But Wegovy in pill form has recently been approved in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

It’s not available on the NHS, so you will need to purchase the tablets, which will be available on prescription.

How do the tablets work?

The tablets, like the injections, contain semaglutide, which makes you feel fuller when you eat and reduces food cravings.

What are the differences between the tablets and the injections?

  • Tablets are taken every day. Injections are administered once a week
  • The starting dose is 1.5mg for tablets and 0.5mg for injections
  • Tablets don’t need to be stored in the fridge; injections do.
  • Tablets will be much more convenient for anyone who doesn’t like injections
  • Pricing may be slightly lower, although this hasn’t as yet been confirmed

One other important difference is the timing of your medication. Wegovy injections should be taken at roughly the same time and day each week, but this time slot can be scheduled to suit your lifestyle.

Tablets, on the other hand, must be taken on an empty stomach after not eating for 8 hours, so that is likely to be first thing in the morning. But then after you take it you can’t eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes to allow the tablets to be absorbed. So, in tablet form, Wegovy isn’t quite as flexible.

What about side effects?

The most common side effects from taking Wegovy tablets are similar to the injections. You may experience nausea, constipation or diarrhoea, and maybe vomiting. Wegovy has an online information leaflet. You can read it to find out more about other less common side effects such as pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, and when not to use Wegovy.

Does it have any other benefits apart from weight loss?

In 2024 the British Heart Foundation reported that Wegovy had also been approved to “help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people diagnosed with heart and circulatory diseases,” as well as a body mass index in the overweight or obese range which is a BMI of higher or equal to 27.

Will the Wegovy tablet become available on the NHS?

Before it becomes available, it must be recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). At the moment, there isn’t any information available about this decision.

Can I buy Wegovy tablets from VSM Pharmacy?

Now the tablets have been approved, they should soon be available from the pharmacy. You can get more information about availability from a member of staff.

How do I book a consultation at the weight loss clinic?

You can book a free consultation online, by calling us on 01276 21002 or coming into the pharmacy.  On the day of your appointment, our weight loss clinician will go through your weight loss goals and assess which treatment would be most suitable.

We’ll then show you how to use your medication safely and provide you with a useful information pack with lifestyle and dietary advice. You’ll also get continuous support and progress reviews to discuss medication adjustments and answer any questions you might have.
