Do I need the diphtheria, tetanus & polio booster?
This is the quiet workhorse of travel vaccination — recommended for more trips than almost anything else. One combined injection covers all three:

What do these three vaccines protect against?
Tetanus bacteria live in soil and animal waste worldwide and enter through cuts, burns and animal scratches. The toxin causes severe muscle spasms (“lockjaw”) and is fatal in a significant minority of cases even with intensive care — and there’s no immunity from past infection.
Diphtheria spreads person-to-person and remains present in parts of Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. It forms a membrane in the throat that can obstruct breathing, and its toxin damages the heart and nerves — travellers with waned immunity can bring it home.
Polio is close to eradication but still circulates in a handful of countries — which is why Pakistan and Nigeria enforce exit vaccination rules for longer stays. Infection can cause permanent paralysis; the booster keeps both you and the eradication effort protected.
How the combined booster works
One inactivated injection (Td/IPV) covering all three diseases — quick, well tolerated, and effective almost straight away:

Given in the upper arm; a sore arm for a day or two is the usual after-effect. It can be given at the same appointment as your other travel vaccines.

How do I know if I need the tetanus booster?
If your last diphtheria-tetanus-polio dose was more than 10 years ago — or you have no record — travel guidance says have the booster. UK adults who finished school before 2004 often had their last dose as teenagers.
Is it three separate injections?
No — one combined injection covers diphtheria, tetanus and polio together, and protects for 10 years.
What are the polio rules for Pakistan and Nigeria?
For stays over 4 weeks, both countries can require proof of polio vaccination within the previous 12 months when you exit. We give the combined booster and provide the certificate to carry with your passport.
How quickly does the booster work?
Almost immediately in anyone previously vaccinated — it recalls existing immunity. Even a booking-week appointment before travel is worthwhile.
What happens if I cut myself abroad without a booster?
You’d need urgent medical assessment and possibly tetanus immunoglobulin — harder to access in many destinations. A 10-second booster before travel is the easier path.
