What is Pharmacy First?
Pharmacy First is an NHS service that lets our pharmacists assess and treat seven common conditions on the spot — without you needing to see a GP first. You can walk in, book online, or be referred to us by your GP practice, NHS 111 or urgent care.
The consultation happens in our private consultation room. With your consent the pharmacist can check your NHS record, examine you where needed, and — where clinically appropriate — supply prescription-strength treatment under NHS arrangements, including antibiotics or antivirals for some conditions. A summary is sent to your GP so your records stay joined up.
If your symptoms need a doctor, we will say so and help arrange the right care — you will never be left without a next step.
The seven conditions we can treat

Outside these age ranges, or with complicating factors, the right route is usually your GP — we will point you the right way.
How it works
Walk in, call or book
No referral needed — come in when it suits you, call 01276 21002, or book a time online. GP practices and NHS 111 can also refer you to us electronically.
Private consultation
A pharmacist sees you in our consultation room, asks about your symptoms, examines you where needed and, with your consent, checks your NHS record.
Treatment and follow-up
You leave with self-care advice, over-the-counter options, or prescription-strength treatment where the NHS pathway allows. Your GP record is updated, and we refer you on if a doctor is needed.
What does it cost?
The Pharmacy First consultation is free — it is a funded NHS service.
If a medicine is supplied under the service, the normal NHS prescription charge applies per item, exactly as it would for a GP prescription. You pay nothing for the medicine if you are exempt from prescription charges — which includes all children, over-60s and other standard NHS exemption groups.
Over-the-counter options recommended during the consultation are paid for as normal shop purchases.
