What are measles, mumps and rubella?
Measles, mumps and rubella are three viral infections covered by a single vaccine. Measles is the headline act: among the most contagious viruses known, it causes high fever and rash, with complications ranging from ear infections and pneumonia to encephalitis. Falling vaccination rates have brought sizeable outbreaks back to Europe, including the UK.
Mumps causes swollen salivary glands and, in teenage and adult men, painful testicular inflammation — it still circulates through universities. Rubella (German measles) is mild for most people but devastating in early pregnancy, where it causes serious birth defects. Rubella immunity matters for everyone around a pregnancy, not just the mother.
Two doses of MMR give lifelong protection to nearly everyone, and the UK offers the vaccine free through GP surgeries. MMR is a live vaccine: it is not suitable during pregnancy or for people with significantly weakened immune systems.

Frequently asked questions
Is MMR not free on the NHS?
It is — anyone can catch up free through their GP, and if cost is the deciding factor that is the right route. Our private service exists for speed: same-week appointments timed around travel, with the rest of your travel vaccines planned in the same visit.
How do I know if I had two doses?
Ask your GP surgery for your vaccination record. UK children have routinely had two MMR doses since 1996 — adults born earlier, or who grew up abroad, are the most likely to have gaps.
Is one catch-up dose enough?
For most adults a single catch-up dose closes the gap. Where two are advised — for example, no previous doses at all — they are given a month apart. We will confirm what you need at your appointment.
Why does measles matter for travellers?
It is extraordinarily contagious — airborne, and infectious before the rash even appears. Outbreaks are currently active on every continent, and airports and planes are efficient places to meet it.
Can I have MMR and the yellow fever vaccine together?
Yes — on the same day, or 4 weeks apart, because both are live vaccines. This is exactly the kind of scheduling we sort out at the risk assessment.
Is the MMR vaccine safe?
MMR has one of the most extensively studied safety records of any vaccine, used worldwide for over 50 years. The claim once linking it to autism was based on discredited research and has been comprehensively disproven.
