Do I need the chikungunya vaccine?
Chikungunya vaccination is a considered choice, not a routine jab — it depends on where you are going, for how long, and whether an outbreak is active. Here is the honest picture.

What is chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by day-biting Aedes mosquitoes — the same species that carry dengue and Zika. The name comes from a Makonde word meaning “to become contorted”, after the stooped posture of people suffering its hallmark symptom: sudden fever followed by intense pain in the hands, wrists, ankles and knees.
Most people recover within one to two weeks, but the joint pain is the sting in the tail — in a significant share of cases, particularly older adults, it lingers for months and sometimes years, mimicking rheumatoid arthritis. There is no antiviral treatment; care is rest, fluids and pain relief while the virus runs its course.
Chikungunya circulates across Asia, Africa, the Indian Ocean islands, the Caribbean and Central and South America, with large outbreaks flaring unpredictably — recent years have seen major epidemics in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Brazil. Vaccination is a recent arrival in travel medicine: single-dose protection is now available at our Camberley clinic.

Protection needs around 2 weeks to build, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Bite avoidance still matters — the same mosquitoes carry dengue, for which separate vaccination is available: VSM offers dengue vaccination to all eligible travellers, whether or not you have had dengue before.

Do typical tourists need the chikungunya vaccine?
Not always. For a short stay in an area with no current outbreak, mosquito-bite avoidance is reasonable protection. Vaccination becomes worth considering for outbreak areas, longer or repeated tropical stays, and especially for travellers over 60 or with existing joint problems, who tend to get the most severe symptoms.
How is the chikungunya vaccine given?
As a single injection, at least 2 weeks before travel. It is suitable from 12 years old.
How long does protection last?
The vaccine is new, so long-term data is still building. Current evidence shows strong protection well beyond the first year and no routine booster is currently recommended — we will advise on the latest guidance in clinic.
What are the symptoms of chikungunya?
Sudden fever with severe joint pain in the hands, wrists, ankles and knees, often with headache, muscle pain and a rash. Most people recover in 1–2 weeks, but the joint pain can persist for months, particularly in older adults.
Is chikungunya treatable?
There is no antiviral cure — treatment is rest, fluids and pain relief while your body clears the virus. That is why prevention, vaccination plus bite avoidance, is the strategy.
Does the vaccine protect against dengue or Zika too?
No. The same mosquitoes spread all three, but the chikungunya vaccine covers only chikungunya. Dengue vaccination is available separately at our clinic — open to all eligible travellers, prior infection or not — and bite avoidance protects against everything the mosquitoes carry.
