Do I need the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine?
TBE is a disease of forests and long grass, not cities — so the answer depends almost entirely on what you will be doing. Here is the honest picture.

What is tick-borne encephalitis?
Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection of the brain and spinal cord spread by the bite of infected ticks — small, spider-like creatures that wait on grass stems and ferns for a passing meal. Ticks attach painlessly, so many people never notice the bite. Rarely, TBE can also be caught from unpasteurised milk in endemic areas.
Most infections begin flu-like: fever, headache and aching muscles a week or two after the bite. In a minority of cases the virus then reaches the nervous system, causing meningitis or encephalitis — with a real risk of lasting neurological damage. There is no antiviral treatment; hospital care is supportive while the infection runs its course.
TBE is established across a broad band of Europe and Asia — Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Baltic states and much of eastern Europe, extending through Russia towards China and Japan. Risk is seasonal and rural. Austria, which vaccinates most of its population, shows how routine the protection has become where the disease is at home.

Vaccination protects against TBE — but ticks in the same forests also carry Lyme disease, for which there is no vaccine. Tick checks and repellent stay essential either way.

Which countries have tick-borne encephalitis?
Central, northern and eastern Europe — Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Poland and Czechia among them — plus Russia and forested parts of northern China and Japan. Risk is rural and seasonal, roughly March to November.
Do I need the TBE vaccine for a city break?
Almost never. TBE is caught in forests, meadows and long grass, not in old towns and museums. It becomes relevant when hiking, camping or countryside stays enter the plan.
How is the TBE vaccine given?
Three doses from 1 year old: the second follows 1–3 months after the first (2 weeks on an accelerated schedule), and the third completes the course 5–12 months later. The first dose should be at least 4 weeks before travel, and a booster follows after 3 years if you are still at risk.
How do I avoid tick bites?
Stick to paths, wear long trousers tucked into socks, use repellent on skin and clothing, and check your whole body — and children and pets — daily. Remove any tick promptly with fine tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling steadily.
Is TBE treatable?
There is no specific antiviral treatment — hospital care supports the body while the infection runs its course. That is exactly why vaccination is the strategy for genuinely exposed travellers.
Is tick-borne encephalitis in the UK?
A small number of cases have been detected in England in recent years, but the risk here remains very low. Vaccination is about travel to the established endemic areas of Europe and Asia.
