Are you going abroad on holiday, or a business trip to a destination where you need vaccinations?

Did you know you now have the convenience of being able to make an appointment at VSM Pharmacy? Here you can discuss your needs and schedule a convenient time to have them administered.

Why do I need Vaccinations?

Vaccines work to prevent viral and bacterial diseases. Some infections are common in certain countries. For example, Typhoid is a common infection in India.  A vaccination will ensure that you don’t become ill from these infections while you are abroad

How do I find out if I need vaccinations?

You can find the information on the Internet. Travel Health Pro will give you information about the recommended vaccines for the country you are visiting.

The website is part of the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC). It was set up in 2002 by the Department of Health.

For example, you are heading off for a holiday to Thailand. Open the Travel Health Pro website and click on Country Information. You will see countries listed from A to Z. Click on ‘T’ and then click Thailand.

The Thailand page has a box with vaccine recommendations. Click on the box and you can read the recommendations for travellers.

The advice is that most travellers should have Hepatitis A and Tetanus vaccinations.  But say you plan on cycling around Thailand, or you are staying for more than a month they recommend you also have a Rabies vaccination.

Other recommendations apply depending on what you intend to do in the country. You might also need one or more of the following vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Rabies
  • Tuberculosis
  • Typhoid

You can look up any country from this website to find out what vaccines you need before your visit.

Can the pharmacy tell me what vaccinations I need?

Yes. When you have your free consultation with the pharmacy they will ask where you are going and let you know what vaccinations you need.

When should I have the vaccine?

Most vaccines must be administered at least 2 weeks before travel. But some vaccines need a time frame of between 4 weeks and 6 months. For example, the Hepatitis A + B combined vaccine is administered at least 6 months before travel.

When you know where you are going contact us here at VSM Pharmacy. We can tell you when you need to come in and see us. You can also have a look at the information we’ve put on our website.

At the pharmacy, we offer 16 essential immunisations against viruses and bacteria including:

  • Rubella
  • Typhoid

How much do travel vaccinations cost?

There is a full list of costs on our website, but on average the costs are between £39.99 and £95.00, depending on the type of vaccination you need. If you were to have a Typhoid vaccination you would pay £34.99.

How do I make an appointment?

You can make an appointment online, call us on 01276 21002 or pop into the pharmacy.  At your appointment, we’ll go through a questionnaire and assess what vaccination you need. The appointment typically lasts around half an hour.

Sometimes you might be able to have your vaccination on the same day as your appointment. It depends on the type of vaccination you need. If you need to come back, we will give you another appointment.
