Common Eye Conditions and How to Treat Them

Common Eye Conditions

https://vsmpharmacy.co.uk/3-eye-conditions/Many people don’t think about their eyes when they are completing a cleansing routine. But eye hygiene is important if you want to try and prevent common eye conditions such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis.

Looking after your eyes also means you can alleviate irritation caused by dry eyes and allergies.

What are the symptoms of a common eye complaint?

Conjunctivitis

If you have conjunctivitis the white of your eyes will be a red or pink colour. Your eyes might be watery, and you’ll have the urge to rub them all the time.

Conjunctivitis can be caused by a bacterial infection, allergy, or a virus.

Do I need to see a Doctor?

It’s a good idea to find out what is causing the conjunctivitis because if you have a bacterial infection you may need to take antibiotics. However, if your conjunctivitis is caused by an allergy or a virus then you can ask your pharmacist for help with treatments to alleviate the discomfort.

Blepharitis

Your eyes might be itchy with a burning or stinging sensation.

What causes Blepharitis?

The cause of the condition isn’t really known, but it is thought to affect people who do not produce enough tears and so suffer with dry eyes. It also affects people who have certain skin conditions like acne, dermatitis, and rosacea.

Blepharitis is a long-term condition that will come and go at intervals.

Do I need to see a doctor if I have Blepharitis?

You should see a doctor if you have severe blepharitis. Your doctor might then refer you to an ophthalmologist who is a specialist in eye care.

Allergies

If you are allergic to things like pollen, dust, and animals your eyes may be itchy and sore. This condition is called Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Allergic Conjunctivitis mainly affects the area underneath the upper eyelid. It causes swelling, redness and there may also be small, raised lumps inside the eyelid.

Do I need to see a doctor if I have an allergy?

Normally people with allergies and hay fever cope by using home remedies available from the pharmacy.

You can buy over-the-counter eye drops which contain antihistamine as well as taking antihistamine tablets.

Are there any do’s and don’ts if I have an eye condition?

  • You shouldn’t wear contact lenses if you have conjunctivitis or allergies because this could add to the bacteria present in your eyes. Wait until your eyes feel better or you have stopped using eye drops.
  • Resist the temptation to use make up. Again, this can add to the bacteria in your eye.
  • Another thing you should try not to do is to rub your eyes as this could make the symptoms worse.
  • Do wash your hands regularly using warm soapy water.
  • Wear sunglasses if you are going outside.
  • Try to keep away from anything that causes allergies.
  • Bathe your eyes with an eye bath (you can buy this from your pharmacy) or use a wet flannel that’s been soaked in cold water to alleviate symptoms.
  • Clean your eyes with hygienic wipes such as those from the Blephaclean range.

The Blephaclean Range

The Blephaclean range consists of wipes, drops, and gels that have clinically proven antimicrobial properties. They don’t contain any preservatives or perfumes and they are safe for children to use as well as adults.

Using a product from the Blephaclean range will reduce bacteria on the eyelid and so help prevent conditions that are caused by allergies, dry eyes, blepharitis, and conjunctivitis.
