Time matters with shingles. Antiviral treatment is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing — if you think you have shingles, come in or book today rather than waiting. Free NHS service for adults 18+.

What is shingles?

Shingles is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which stays dormant in the body after childhood infection. It causes a painful, blistering rash — almost always on one side of the body, in a band across the chest, back or face. Many people feel tingling, burning or stabbing pain in the area a few days before anything appears on the skin.

Shingles itself cannot be caught from someone else, but the fluid in the blisters can cause chickenpox in people who have never had it — so avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns and anyone with a weakened immune system until the rash has scabbed over.

How we treat it

The pharmacist assesses the rash and your symptoms against the NHS pathway. Where appropriate, antiviral tablets can be supplied on the spot — these reduce the severity and length of the episode and lower the risk of lingering nerve pain, and they work best started within 72 hours of the rash appearing.

You will also get practical help managing it: pain relief options, keeping the rash covered, and what to expect over the two to four weeks it typically takes to settle.

Some situations always need a doctor rather than the pharmacy pathway — we check for these and refer you the same day if needed.

Medicines supplied under Pharmacy First follow normal NHS prescription charge rules — free if you are exempt.

When to get urgent help

  • A rash on your nose, around an eye, or any eye pain or blurred vision — urgent same-day care; shingles near the eye can threaten sight
  • A weakened immune system (chemotherapy, immunosuppressant medicines, untreated HIV) — contact your GP or 111 urgently rather than waiting
  • Pregnancy with a suspected shingles rash — same-day medical advice
  • Widespread rash on both sides of the body, confusion, or severe headache — urgent assessment

Frequently asked questions

Why the 72-hour window?
Antiviral treatment works by limiting the virus while it is actively multiplying — starting within 72 hours of the rash gives the best reduction in severity, duration and the risk of long-lasting nerve pain. Later treatment can still be worthwhile in some cases, so come in even if you are past the window.
Is shingles contagious?
You cannot give anyone shingles, but the blister fluid can cause chickenpox in people who have never had it. Keep the rash covered and avoid pregnant women, newborns and immunocompromised people until it has scabbed over.
What does it cost?
The consultation is free. If antivirals are supplied, normal NHS prescription charge rules apply — free if you are exempt, including everyone aged 60 and over.
Who does the pathway cover?
Adults aged 18 and over. Suspected shingles in children, in pregnancy, near the eye, or in anyone immunosuppressed needs a doctor — we will help arrange that quickly.
