Do I need the Meningitis ACWY vaccine?
Meningococcal ACWY protects against four strains of the bacteria behind meningitis and blood poisoning — spread by close contact, and a formal entry requirement for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia:

What is meningococcal disease?
Meningococcal bacteria spread through close contact — coughs, sneezes, shared living space — and can cause meningitis (infection of the brain lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Disease is rare but moves terrifyingly fast: hours from first fever to critical illness.
Risk concentrates where people crowd together: the mass gatherings of Hajj and Umrah, and Africa’s “meningitis belt”, where dry-season dust and close indoor living drive epidemics from roughly December to June.
The ACWY vaccine covers the four strains behind most travel-related outbreaks. UK teenagers have been offered it at school since 2015 — but protection is thought to wane, and most adults were never vaccinated at all.

Around 5 years for the conjugate vaccines used in the UK — repeat pilgrims and frequent belt travellers should check their certificate dates before each trip.
I had a meningitis jab at school — am I covered?
UK school programmes have offered ACWY to teenagers since 2015, so younger adults may be covered — but immunity wanes and pilgrimage rules look at certificate dates. Bring your records and we’ll advise honestly.
What is the meningitis belt?
A band across sub-Saharan Africa — from Senegal and The Gambia in the west to Ethiopia in the east — where dry-season epidemics occur roughly December to June. Northern Ghana and northern Nigeria fall squarely inside it.
What are the warning signs of meningitis?
Sudden fever with severe headache, stiff neck, dislike of light, drowsiness or a non-blanching rash — hours matter, so seek emergency care immediately, wherever you are in the world.
