Pharmacy First Service
To offer wider support to the community, VSM Pharmacy has joined the Pharmacy First Service. This service will begin on the 31st of January 2024 to offer a new VSM Pharmacy service. Its object is to give advice and treatment for seven common conditions, funded by the NHS.
The seven common health conditions are:
- Shingles
- Sore throat
- Acute otitis media
- Sinusitis
- Infected insect bite
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women
- Impetigo
 What is Shingles?
Shingles is a rash with blisters that develops on one side of the body or face and can be extremely painful.
Sore Throat
A dry, scratchy throat that’s painful to swallow can be a sign of a sore throat.
Acute Otitis Media
This is an infection of the middle ear caused by a virus or bacteria. Your ear can feel full and heavy and will be accompanied by earache.
Sinusitis
Sinusitis can cause severe pain around the forehead, eyes, and cheeks. You may also experience a high fever.
Infected Insect Bite
If you have pus around the area that was bitten together with redness and pain, the insect bite has likely become infected.
Urinary Tract Infection
Peeing more than usual or passing pee that’s painful then you might have a urinary tract infection. Other symptoms include tummy pain, a low or high temperature and pee that appears cloudy.
Impetigo
Impetigo is a skin infection. It causes sores and blisters. It isn’t a serious complaint, but it is contagious
Are other conditions included?
Yes. There are many common illnesses included in the service. As well as the most common seven illnesses the list also includes:
- Diarrhoea
- Headache
- Heartburn
- Minor burns and scalds
- Thrush
- Head lice
- Conjunctivitis
- Sprains and strains
How does Pharmacy First work?
If you suspect you may have one of the common illnesses on the list, you can go to the pharmacy and ask for a private consultation. Your GP may also refer you or another health service provider like NHS 111.
The Pharmacist will ask you some questions to register you for the service. The questions include the details of your GP practice. You don’t have to register, but this will mean you won’t get free medication or medicines at a reduced cost. Advice of course is free!
Tell the Pharmacist if you think you may be pregnant or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. And, list the medication you already take and confirm whether or not you have any allergies.
Your Pharmacist may or may not provide medication, in some circumstances, you won’t need it. If medication is necessary, you will pay for your prescription unless you are exempt.
The Pharmacy First service begins on the 31st of January 2024, but of course, we are always available to help and provide advice at other times. Pop in and speak to a member of staff if you need help.
