Brazil is a fascinating country and a great place to visit. Before you go though make sure you have the relevant vaccines so that you're protected while you're there. If you're not sure what they are, read on to find out more.

There is so much to see in Brazil. From coffee routes in Minas Gerais to the jungles of the Amazon, the beaches at Floripa, the bustling city life of San Paulo and the spectacular views from Sugarloaf Mountain.

If you’re planning to visit Brazil in 2026 then don’t forget to book your vaccinations in plenty of time. You can have many common vaccinations up to 2 weeks before you depart. But some, like rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Hepatitis B must be administered months before travel.

If you’ve left it late, for some vaccinations, it’s still important to have the protection of the vaccines you can have. It’s better to have some protection than none at all.

Before you depart for Brazil, make sure your UK routine vaccinations are up to date. Routine vaccinations include

  • MMR/MMRV
  • Diphtheria, polio, tetanus, whooping cough, influenzae type B and hepatitis B
  • Men ACWY
  • Flu and shingles for over 65s

Recommended Vaccines for Brazil

Travel Health Pro, which was set up by the Department of Health say most travellers should have the following vaccinations, whether they are traveling in urban or rural areas of Brazil.

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A – You can get hepatitis A from a person who is infected or from contaminated water or food. It is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A

  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • jaundice (yellow coloured skin and whites of eyes)
  • Dark urine

How is Hepatitis A Treated?

There isn’t any specific treatment. The infection usually clears up on its own. But it can take a long time to recover, typically weeks or months. Sometimes, just after recovery you could relapse and become ill again, but after that you will make a full recovery

The Hepatitis Vaccination

The Hepatitis A vaccination is 2 doses. You should have the first dose at least two weeks before you travel. This will give you protection. Then you can have the second dose between 6 and 12 months later. The second dose protects you for around 20 years. The vaccine is suitable for young people over the age of 16 and adults.

Typhoid

Typhoid is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. The symptoms of typhoid often start within 3 and 6 weeks of being infected.

What are the symptoms of Typhoid?

Typhoid symptoms include:

  • High temperature
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • aches and pains with chills
  • loss of appetite

You might also have diarrhoea and stomach pain and a rash on your upper body.

What is the treatment for Typhoid?

If you get any of the above symptoms and you have recently visited Brazil, then it is important to get medical help because untreated, it can lead to peritonitis. If you are diagnosed with typhoid, then you’ll be given antibiotics. Once you start taking the antibiotics you should begin to feel better within 3 to 5 days. You might relapse after recovery and if this happens, you’ll need more treatment.

Tetanus

Tetanus is caused by a toxin in a bacteria that enters the skin through a burn, scratch or a wound. If you are up to date with your UKthen you  vaccinations, may not need a tetanus jab. But if it has been 10 years or more since you were vaccinated then you may need another vaccination or a booster.

Other Vaccine Recommendations

Other vaccines are recommended depending where in Brazil you will be travelling and how long you will be staying in that area. These include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rabies

The following are recommendations for infections caused by mosquito bites. There is a risk of all three infections in Brazil.

  • Yellow Fever – You can have this shot up to 2 weeks before travel There is only one dose
  • Dengue – Must be administered at least 18 weeks before travel and the full course is 2 doses
  • Chikungunya – You need to have this vaccination  at least 2 weeks before travel. The full course is one dose
