The Flu Virus – And How You Can Handle It

Flu cases are particularly high this year. Your best protection is a vaccine. Read our latest blog to find out if you qualify for a free NHS flu jab or how you can have a private vaccination at VSM Pharmacy.

This month the newspapers are full of stories about the increasing number of positive tests for flu in the UK. If you want a flu vaccination to protect you over the holiday season, then the time to do it is now.

Although the media and the NHS call the virus a super-flu, this isn’t an indication that it is a stronger or more dangerous virus. The name is used because of the speed by which it has spread. And this is because it is a new virus strain which people haven’t had before and so fewer people have built up an immunity to it.

What’s the best protection against the flu virus?

The best protection is a vaccination. Those people who qualify for a free NHS flu vaccination can make an appointment with us here at the pharmacy.  You qualify if:

  • You are 65 or over, or you will be 65 by the 31 March 2026
  • You are pregnant
  • You are the main carer of an older or disabled person
  • You receive carer’s allowance
  • You live with someone with a weakened immune system
  • You have a health condition that makes you eligible for a free NHS vaccination
  • You are living in a care home

What about Private Vaccinations?

A private vaccination is an affordable way to protect yourself from winter flu viruses. VSM Pharmacy offers a flu vaccine service which costs £24.99. You can make an appointment online and the procedure will take less than 5 minutes.

Does the vaccine protect me immediately?

No. It takes up to two weeks for the vaccine to develop maximum immunity. That’s why you need to have it done now if you want protection over the Christmas and New Year period.

Why should I have a vaccine every year?

Because of precisely what’s happened this year. A new virus has emerged which means last year’s vaccination won’t give you protection from it. A vaccine every year will protect you from new virus strains.

Should I wear mask, especially now with the Christmas crowds?

There’s no official instructions about wearing masks so it’s up to you. However, wearing a mask will protect you from becoming infected or if you’re feeling ill, from infecting anyone else. It’s something you might want to think about if you spend part of your day travelling on crowded buses, trains or tubes.

What are the symptoms of flu?

The most common symptoms of flu include:

  • Feeling tired
  • Aching all over
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Temperature
  • Dry cough
  • Sneezing

Symptoms usually start between 1 and 3 days after you have been infected and they may last for around a week. If you have a cough, then this may last longer and you might continue to feel tired for a few weeks after you’ve recovered.

Are there any other ways I can protect myself?

Yes. Wash your hands regularly, wipe down surfaces and door handles, sneeze into a tissue and then put it into the bin.

What medication should I take if I catch flu?

Ask your pharmacy for over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or paracetamol which will help to lower a temperature if you have one, relieve aches and pains and help with headaches. Lozenges, throat gargles or honey and lemon cough syrups will help to sooth a sore throat.
