The Covid Vaccination – 2025 Eligibility Changes

Covid Vaccination
The rules around who can get the COVID-19 jab have changed this year, and many people aren’t sure if they still qualify. Read our latest blog to help you understand what’s different and whether you’re eligible.

If you are an adult over the age of 50, or a carer, you might have thought that this year you would be having a Covid vaccination, like other years. But this year the rules have changed.

Who is eligible for the Covid vaccination now?

You can have a free NHS jab if you are:

  • 75 years of age or more
  • Living in a care home for older adults
  • Aged 6 months or over with a severely weakened immune system

I’m under 75 and healthy, so does that mean I can’t have the Covid vaccination?

Yes. Under the current NHS programme, healthy adults under the age of 75 are no longer eligible. The NHS are now focusing on people who are most likely to become seriously ill.

Why the change?

The risk of severe illness from Covid is much lower now in the UK than in previous years because most people have built up a good level of immunity from having vaccinations previously or because they had Covid-19 in the past. The government have therefore decided to use their resources to vaccinate older people and people with weakened immune systems, who are more likely to need the protection of a vaccination.

How do I know if I have weakened Immunity?

This is not the full list, the best way to find out if you are eligible because of immunosuppression is to ask your doctor or speak to your pharmacist. But It usually refers to people who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, transplant patients, people with HIV or people who have a history of lymphoma, myeloma or leukaemia.

The list also includes people who need long-term immunosuppressive treatments for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis.

If I am eligible, how do I book my vaccination?

It’s easy to book an NHS vaccination. You can book online through the NHS website or call 119 free of charge.

Should I have the Covid vaccine privately if I’m not eligible for an NHS jab?

Having the vaccine privately is a personal choice, but you might want to have the jab if:

  • You live with someone who is high-risk
  • You care for an elderly person
  • You work in an environment where there are lots of people
  • You want the reassurance of a vaccination
  • You intend to travel and want the protection of the Covid vaccine

Does the pharmacy provide a private vaccination service?

Yes, we do. The service is available in our travel clinic. The details about the Covid vaccination are on the web page and you can make an appointment online, or by telephone at 01276 21002. If you’re, you can also come into the pharmacy and make an appointment with a member of staff. Currently (2025) the cost for a private Covid vaccination is £94.99.
