Got carried away in the moment and didn’t use a condom, or used one and it split or after sex, you realised you’d forgotten your pill?  All these situations can put you into a panic if you don’t want to get pregnant. It’s at times like these that you depend on us for the morning-after pill.

Our morning-after pill service offers discreet emergency contraceptive support, in-person and online, so that when the unexpected happens, you can get the medication you need, fast. And, if you pick it up from the pharmacy, it is completely free.

What is the morning-after pill?

The morning-after pill can be taken after unprotected sex to reduce the risk of pregnancy. It works mainly by delaying ovulation or making it harder for an egg to attach to the lining of the womb.

Do I need to take it the morning after?

No. Although it is best to act quickly, you do have time to organise buying and taking the medication. The two brands available are:

  • Levonorgestrel – You can take this pill up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. It is more effective if you take it within 24 hours.
  • EllaOne – This is effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex

Does the morning-after pill work if you have already ovulated?

No. Emergency contraception only delays or prevents ovulation. It won’t stop a fertilised egg from implanting, and it won’t end an existing pregnancy. If you have already ovulated before taking emergency contraception, then it is unlikely to be effective, and you might get pregnant.

Why speed and privacy matter

The effectiveness of Levonorgestrel is stronger if you take it within 24 hours is around 95%. It then begins to decrease to between 85% and 58% on the second and third day. That’s why at VSM Pharmacy, we offer a next-day service. When you order online, the emergency contraceptive will be sent to you in discreet, unbranded packaging to protect your privacy.

Does emergency contraception have any side effects?

It is very rare to have serious side effects with the emergency contraceptive pill. But there are some common side effects that include cramping and stomach pain like you’re having a period, nausea, sickness or headache. If you’re sick within 2 hours of taking the pill, you may need to take another pill. Phone your pharmacy to find out.

How do I order the emergency contraceptive pill online?

There are three steps to online ordering. Firstly, click the order online button and fill in the EHC Medical Assessment form. We will then review the form, and if there are no problems, we will prepare and ship your order immediately.

Why does the Pharmacist need to do an online consultation?

The emergency contraceptive pill isn’t suitable for everyone. For example, you may be allergic to one of the ingredients in the pill. You might also have to avoid taking this pill if you have severe asthma or you take a medication for a condition such as epilepsy, HIV or TB.

Supplements like St John’s Wort might also reduce the pill’s effectiveness. You can’t take the emergency contraceptive pill if you are already pregnant, but you can take it if you are breastfeeding.

The online or in-person consultation ensures the medication is safe for you to take and that you are within the time limit for the pill to work.

Can you use the morning-after pill regularly?

Using the emergency pill as a regular form of contraception isn’t recommended. It’s not as reliable as other contraceptive methods, and it doesn’t protect you from catching an STD.

If you are worried you might have Chlamydia, we have a free screening service. We give you a kit which you send off for testing. If it comes back positive, we can provide the appropriate treatment free of charge at the pharmacy.

Are there any costs for the emergency contraceptive service?

Only postage. We provide the service in partnership with the Surrey County Council. If you come into the pharmacy, it is completely free. If you order online for home delivery, there is a charge for postage of £6.99.

To order the emergency contraceptive pill, fill in the online form. If you have any questions, you can ring us on 01276 21002 or you can come into the pharmacy to buy your emergency contraception or speak to us personally. We have a space where you can speak freely without being overheard.
