It’s a common question for people using Mounjaro, and in this blog, we explain why you might need vitamins and minerals while you’re having Mounjaro injections.
Firstly, most people should get the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet. But when you are on a weight loss journey and using Mounjaro, you might not be getting the nutrients you need because of the side effects of the injection or the fact that you just don’t feel hungry, so you may not be eating enough.
Why you might need supplements
Mounjaro works by reducing your appetite, so you eat less. A common side effect of Mounjaro in the early weeks is sickness and nausea, which might temporarily put you off your food.
This means you might not feel like eating certain foods, or you’ve found yourself skipping meals. This can affect your intake of vitamins and minerals might be affected.
Does that mean everyone should take supplements with Mounjaro?
No. If you are eating a balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, wholegrains, dairy (or alternatives) and healthy fats, then it’s unlikely you’ll need extra supplements. However, if your diet isn’t as good as it should be, then taking supplements could be helpful.
What supplements are recommended?
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is found in animal proteins. If you don’t eat animal products, then you might be short of vitamin B12. It also helps to boost energy levels, so if you feel tired, a B12 supplement might help. You can find vitamin B12 in Cheese, eggs, milk, meat and fish.
Vitamin D
In the early days of taking Mounjaro, you might not feel like doing any exercise outdoors because of feeling tired and nauseous. Vitamin D is recommended by the NHS during autumn and winter when there isn’t a lot of sunshine, and you tend to stay indoors more. It helps with bone strength, muscle function and boosts your immune system.
You can get vitamin D by eating oily fish, egg yolks, some fortified breakfast cereals and liver.
Iron
Red blood cells carry oxygen around your body, and iron plays a part in making red blood cells. Lack of iron can cause Anaemia which makes you feel tired and weak. You can get iron from red meat, liver, nuts and dried fruit, beans and fortified breakfast cereals.
But if you prefer to take a supplement, make sure you don’t take too much because it can make you sick and constipated. The recommended dose is:
- 7mg a day for men (aged 19 and over)
- 7mg for women (aged 50 and over)
- 8mg for women (aged 19 and over)
Too much is more than 20mg a day.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral. It helps with energy levels, hormones and bone health. You will find magnesium in wholemeal bread, spinach and nuts. If you take a supplement, men should take 300mg a day, and women should take 270mg between the ages of 19 and 64.
Multivitamins
If you prefer to take just one supplement, then you can choose a multivitamin. Pick one with B vitamins, iron, magnesium and vitamin D. Multivitamins often contain zinc, which helps to process fat, protein and carbohydrates in food.
