Yellow Fever Vaccination
Yellow Fever Vaccine: Your Essential Travel Companion
Yellow Fever: Key Facts
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, prevalent in certain parts of Africa and South America. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection. More information on Nathnac website.
Understanding Yellow Fever
Yellow fever can cause severe flu-like symptoms, jaundice, and in serious cases, organ failure and death. The risk of contracting yellow fever can be significantly reduced by more than 99% through vaccination. The yellow fever vaccine is highly effective and provides strong immunity within 10 days for 95% of people vaccinated, reaching 99% immunity within 30 days for nearly everyone. This makes the vaccine an essential preventive measure for those traveling to or living in areas where yellow fever is endemic.
The Significance of the Yellow Fever Vaccine
The significance of the yellow fever vaccine extends beyond individual protection; it plays a crucial role in global public health efforts to control the spread of yellow fever, a potentially fatal disease. This is why many countries require a certificate of vaccination for travelers coming from or passing through areas where yellow fever is endemic. There are several reasons for this requirement:
High Fatality Rate: Yellow fever can lead to severe illness and death, with a fatality rate of up to 50% for severe cases. The disease poses a significant threat not only to unvaccinated travelers but also to populations in countries where yellow fever is not endemic, should an infected individual introduce the virus.
Rapid Spread: Yellow fever is transmitted by the Aedes and Haemagogus species of mosquitoes, which are widespread in certain climates and can lead to rapid spread of the disease, especially in areas where mosquito control measures are not effectively implemented.
Prevention is Key: There is no cure for yellow fever; treatment is supportive, aimed at alleviating symptoms. This makes prevention through vaccination the most effective strategy to protect individuals and communities from the disease.
Global Health Security: Requiring proof of vaccination from travelers is a measure to prevent the international spread of yellow fever. It helps protect countries from potential outbreaks, especially those without endemic yellow fever but with the presence of the mosquito vectors that could transmit the virus.
Historical Outbreaks and Epidemics: Yellow fever has caused numerous outbreaks and epidemics throughout history, with devastating health, social, and economic impacts. The requirement for vaccination certificates is a lesson learned from history to prevent future epidemics.
The International Health Regulations (IHR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) endorse the requirement for yellow fever vaccination certificates to ensure that travel and trade can proceed as freely as possible while minimizing the risk of yellow fever spread. This global health measure underscores the significance of the yellow fever vaccine in protecting individuals and preventing the resurgence of yellow fever worldwide.
Is the Yellow Fever Vaccine Safe for Children?
Yes, the vaccine is safe for children over 9 months of age, providing them with protection against the disease.
When Should You Get Vaccinated for Yellow Fever?
It is best to receive the vaccine at least 14 days before travel to ensure immunity and meet entry requirements for certain countries.
Duration of Yellow Fever Vaccine Immunity
The vaccine provides immunity for life for most people, with a booster recommended every 10 years for those at continued risk.
Countries Where Yellow Fever is Endemic or Requires Vaccination Certification
Many countries in Africa and South America are considered endemic zones, and some require proof of vaccination for entry.
It’s crucial to consult the latest travel health advisories from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) or Travel Health Pro for the most current information.
Some Countries Requiring Proof of Yellow Fever Vaccination: Many countries, especially those in Africa and South America, require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry. This requirement often applies to travelers coming from countries where yellow fever is endemic or those who have transited through an airport in a country where yellow fever is present. Some countries that have historically required proof of vaccination include:
- Brazil
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Ghana
- Kenya
- Peru
Countries Where Yellow Fever is Endemic: Yellow fever is endemic in tropical areas of Africa and South America, where the Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes (the vectors that transmit yellow fever) are found. In the past ten years, significant outbreaks and transmissions have been reported in countries including:
- Africa: Angola, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Kenya have reported outbreaks or have areas where yellow fever transmission is known to occur.
- South America: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru have reported cases, particularly in parts of the Amazon basin.
It’s important to note that the situation can change, and new areas can become endemic or report outbreaks. For travelers, the key takeaway is to check the current requirements and recommendations for yellow fever vaccination well in advance of travel, especially if your itinerary includes countries in Africa or South America. Vaccination not only protects the individual but also helps prevent the spread of yellow fever across borders.

What do our customers say?

The local private hospital wanted to charge over £800 ( for a pre 'operation' assessment, the operation, and the follow up appointment ).
I saw VSM advertised and we thought we would try it.
The pharmacist looked at the skin tag and said yes it was suitable for cryotherapy. She cleaned my mothers face, and 'sprayed' the skin tag twice. She said it should drop off in about a week.
After a week, the skin tag has now completely gone, a slight pink mark where it was, and I am sure that will heal in the coming weeks.
This was all painless, straight forward, professional and for less than 10% of the cost of the private hospital.
We are all delighted with how easy it all was, and would recommend VSM to anyone wondering if they need a skin tag or mole removing. Thank you
Looking forward to not scratching any more and to be able to use deodorant, without irritation. Wish I had done this years ago.
Thank you so much. This will make my life so much better. Thanks to all at VSM Frimley.
Keep up the good work.
Appointment was easy to book online with an automated reminder. Great!
Kind regards

Removal of small amounts of wax from both ears.
The level of service was excellent.
The pharmacist was very helpful and reassurin
-Promptly served
-I was clearly explained that I did not need to do both ears, as one was very clean (a photograph was shown to me where I could see my left ear's ear drum)
-The lady was thorough and showed me the 'after' pictures of my right ear once she had finished
I thoroughly recommend using VSM Pharmacy for getting your ears cleaned of wax
If I had to really nit pick, I would suggest that the email which is sent out as confirmation of booking could include a recommendation on using some ear drops to soften the wax for easy cleaning, before the appointment. I was luckily not affected, and my wax came out easy.
Couldn’t feel a thing when the needle went through my arm 👏
I was in and out very quickly and the best thing is..... I CAN HEAR AGAIN.
Hopefully I won't need it again but if I do I'd definitely return here.
Highly recommend flue jab done for another year great service
In fact, we agree that from now on, the lady deserves to be respectfully referred to as "Jabber Julie".
Yours, Sylvia & Richard Manning.

Want to say a huge thank you for all your help Jirina with the whole process.
Thanks to all at VSM Pharmacy.
Highly recommend this company.☺️
cy.
The other staff I spoke to were also friendly and professional.
In November after I had a cold during a holiday I suffered painful ear pressure on the return flight. As the symptons were similar to those in August I went back to VSM. They confirmed there was very little wax in the ear and that it was simply my cold giving me ear pressure problems. Instead of having the pay the full fee for cleaning they just charged me a nominal check up fee which I appreciated.
Overall I would highly recommend them.
Staff were very pleasant and understanding.
VSM Pharmacy treated my problem professionally and book me in the same day. The lady who treated me was very kind and explained everything completely. I cannot speak too highly for the service I got. I would recommend this place to anyone.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
5stars
No waiting about, straight in answered a few questions, operation done, out....
Just how I like it.
Will definitely use the again

Our clinician will determine which vaccination you need during the consultation. For more information on vaccinations per country, visit NaTHNaC.
It depends on the vaccination required. This is something that will be discussed with the clinician during the appointment. More information on children vaccination is available on the NHS Fit for Travel website.
Each vaccine is different and the pros and cons will be explained to you during the appointment. In most cases, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Any medication has the potential to cause side effects and vaccines are the same in that respect.
This is different from vaccine to vaccine and depends on a number of factor. For maximum immunity, completing the full course is recommended.
We have some paediatric vaccines for children under 16 years old.
