Hepatitis B Vaccination
Hepatitis B Vaccination: Essential Protection for Travelers
Embarking on international travel brings with it the excitement of exploring new cultures, cuisines, and landscapes. However, you must take precautionary measures to protect your health against infectious diseases not commonly found in your home country. One such disease is Hepatitis B, a serious infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Fortunately, with the Hepatitis B vaccine, travellers can now shield themselves effectively against this virus. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the key facts about Hepatitis B, underscore the critical importance of vaccination, and explain why VSM Pharmacy’s travel clinic is your ideal partner in travel health preparation. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or planning your first overseas trip, understanding the Hepatitis B vaccine is a crucial step in ensuring a safe and healthy journey.
Hepatitis B: Key Facts
- The Hepatitis B vaccine is available in injectable form.
- The vaccines require three doses.
- The first dose must be administered at least 6 months before travel.
- A booster is required after 5 years.
- The Hepatitis B vaccine is approved for use in individuals as young as two years old in paediatric version, making it crucial for protecting children.
- The vaccine can provide protection for up to 5 years.
- In addition to vaccination, it is important to follow other hepatitis B preventive measures such as using safe needles, practicing safe sex, and avoiding direct contact with blood and bodily fluids to further minimise the risk of Hepatitis B infection.
- The vaccine is particularly important for travelers to regions with high prevalence of Hepatitis B, healthcare workers, individuals with chronic liver disease, and those living in or originating from endemic areas, highlighting the need for vaccination among these high-risk groups.
What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It can cause chronic infection, leading to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death. The virus is highly infectious and is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, including during childbirth, through unprotected sex, and through the use of unsterile needles.
The Importance of the Hepatitis B Vaccine
The hepatitis B vaccine is the mainstay of hepatitis B prevention. It provides long-lasting protection against the virus, significantly reducing the risk of chronic disease and liver cancer associated with HBV infection. The vaccine is recommended for all individuals, especially those travelling to or living in areas with high prevalence of the disease.
Can you vaccinate a child?
Yes, children can and should be vaccinated against hepatitis B. In many countries, the hepatitis B vaccine is included in the routine immunisation schedule for infants, often administered shortly after birth. The vaccine is safe and effective for children, providing them with protection that can last a lifetime.
When do I need to get vaccinated?
For travellers, it’s recommended to get vaccinated well in advance of your trip. The hepatitis B vaccine is usually given as a series of three injections over a six-month period. The first dose can be administered at any time, followed by the second dose one month later, and the third dose six months after the first dose.
How long does immunity last?
The immunity provided by the hepatitis B vaccine is long-lasting. Most people who receive the full three-dose series will have lifelong protection. However, a booster may be recommended for certain individuals, such as those with weakened immune systems or those who remain at high risk of exposure.
Countries Where Hepatitis B is Present
Hepatitis B is present in many parts of the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Other regions with significant rates of hepatitis B include parts of Eastern Europe, South and Central America, and the Middle East.

What do our customers say?

The local private hospital wanted to charge over £800 ( for a pre 'operation' assessment, the operation, and the follow up appointment ).
I saw VSM advertised and we thought we would try it.
The pharmacist looked at the skin tag and said yes it was suitable for cryotherapy. She cleaned my mothers face, and 'sprayed' the skin tag twice. She said it should drop off in about a week.
After a week, the skin tag has now completely gone, a slight pink mark where it was, and I am sure that will heal in the coming weeks.
This was all painless, straight forward, professional and for less than 10% of the cost of the private hospital.
We are all delighted with how easy it all was, and would recommend VSM to anyone wondering if they need a skin tag or mole removing. Thank you
Looking forward to not scratching any more and to be able to use deodorant, without irritation. Wish I had done this years ago.
Thank you so much. This will make my life so much better. Thanks to all at VSM Frimley.
Keep up the good work.
Appointment was easy to book online with an automated reminder. Great!
Kind regards

Removal of small amounts of wax from both ears.
The level of service was excellent.
The pharmacist was very helpful and reassurin
-Promptly served
-I was clearly explained that I did not need to do both ears, as one was very clean (a photograph was shown to me where I could see my left ear's ear drum)
-The lady was thorough and showed me the 'after' pictures of my right ear once she had finished
I thoroughly recommend using VSM Pharmacy for getting your ears cleaned of wax
If I had to really nit pick, I would suggest that the email which is sent out as confirmation of booking could include a recommendation on using some ear drops to soften the wax for easy cleaning, before the appointment. I was luckily not affected, and my wax came out easy.
Couldn’t feel a thing when the needle went through my arm 👏
I was in and out very quickly and the best thing is..... I CAN HEAR AGAIN.
Hopefully I won't need it again but if I do I'd definitely return here.
Highly recommend flue jab done for another year great service
In fact, we agree that from now on, the lady deserves to be respectfully referred to as "Jabber Julie".
Yours, Sylvia & Richard Manning.

Want to say a huge thank you for all your help Jirina with the whole process.
Thanks to all at VSM Pharmacy.
Highly recommend this company.☺️

The other staff I spoke to were also friendly and professional.
In November after I had a cold during a holiday I suffered painful ear pressure on the return flight. As the symptons were similar to those in August I went back to VSM. They confirmed there was very little wax in the ear and that it was simply my cold giving me ear pressure problems. Instead of having the pay the full fee for cleaning they just charged me a nominal check up fee which I appreciated.
Overall I would highly recommend them.
Staff were very pleasant and understanding.
VSM Pharmacy treated my problem professionally and book me in the same day. The lady who treated me was very kind and explained everything completely. I cannot speak too highly for the service I got. I would recommend this place to anyone.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
5stars
No waiting about, straight in answered a few questions, operation done, out....
Just how I like it.
Will definitely use the again
5 star service

Vaccinations FAQs
Our clinician will determine which vaccination you need during the consultation. For more information on vaccinations per country, visit NaTHNaC.
It depends on the vaccination required. This is something that will be discussed with the clinician during the appointment. More information on children vaccination is available on the NHS Fit for Travel website.
Each vaccine is different and the pros and cons will be explained to you during the appointment. In most cases, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Any medication has the potential to cause side effects and vaccines are the same in that respect.
This is different from vaccine to vaccine and depends on a number of factor. For maximum immunity, completing the full course is recommended.
We have some paediatric vaccines for children under 16 years old.

The price per dose is available above. Please note that some vaccines require multiple courses which are also listed in the price list above. We advertise the price per dose as some customers may have received an initial dose previously and may only require the booster or one dose to complete the course.
