Dengue Fever Vaccination
The Dengue Fever Vaccine: Protecting Your Health During Tropical Travels
Are you planning a trip to a tropical or subtropical region? Don’t let dengue fever ruin your adventure. Protect yourself by getting the dengue vaccine at our travel clinic. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of the dengue vaccine, the areas where dengue is prevalent, and why our clinic is the best choice for your travel health needs.
Dengue Vaccination: Key Facts
- The dengue vaccine is given as a series of two doses over the course of three months.
- The vaccine is suitable for both adults and children from the age of 4 years old.
- The vaccine protects against all four dengue virus serotypes.
- It can reduce the risk of dengue fever caused by any serotype by around 60-80% in those previously infected.
- The vaccine does not provide complete protection, so preventive measures like mosquito repellent are still important.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Symptoms include high fever, rash, muscle and joint pain, and headache. In severe cases, it can cause bleeding, organ impairment, and plasma leakage. Dengue is a leading cause of illness in many tropical and subtropical regions.
The Importance of the Dengue Vaccine
The dengue vaccine offers crucial protection against this potentially serious viral disease. By getting vaccinated, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting dengue while travelling to affected areas. The vaccine is especially important for those at higher risk, such as individuals with weakened immune systems.
Can children get the dengue vaccine?
Yes, the currently available dengue vaccine (Qdenga) is approved for children age 4 and over.
When should I get vaccinated?
Qdenga is given in a series of two shots separated over a three-month period.
- Short Notice Travel: Even if you don’t have three months before traveling, getting at least one shot is beneficial. One dose of Qdenga offers about 81% defence against all types of dengue virus until you can get the second shot.
- Enhanced Protection: After receiving the second Qdenga shot, you’ll have around 95% protection starting from 30 days and lasting up to a year after vaccination.
How long does immunity last?
Studies show that the dengue vaccine provides around 60% protection against dengue fever for at least 4 years after completing the course.
Dengue-Endemic Areas
Dengue is prevalent in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including:
- Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam
- South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
- Latin America and Caribbean: Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico
- Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique

What do our customers say?

The local private hospital wanted to charge over £800 ( for a pre 'operation' assessment, the operation, and the follow up appointment ).
I saw VSM advertised and we thought we would try it.
The pharmacist looked at the skin tag and said yes it was suitable for cryotherapy. She cleaned my mothers face, and 'sprayed' the skin tag twice. She said it should drop off in about a week.
After a week, the skin tag has now completely gone, a slight pink mark where it was, and I am sure that will heal in the coming weeks.
This was all painless, straight forward, professional and for less than 10% of the cost of the private hospital.
We are all delighted with how easy it all was, and would recommend VSM to anyone wondering if they need a skin tag or mole removing. Thank you
Looking forward to not scratching any more and to be able to use deodorant, without irritation. Wish I had done this years ago.
Thank you so much. This will make my life so much better. Thanks to all at VSM Frimley.
Keep up the good work.
Appointment was easy to book online with an automated reminder. Great!
Kind regards

Removal of small amounts of wax from both ears.
The level of service was excellent.
The pharmacist was very helpful and reassurin
-Promptly served
-I was clearly explained that I did not need to do both ears, as one was very clean (a photograph was shown to me where I could see my left ear's ear drum)
-The lady was thorough and showed me the 'after' pictures of my right ear once she had finished
I thoroughly recommend using VSM Pharmacy for getting your ears cleaned of wax
If I had to really nit pick, I would suggest that the email which is sent out as confirmation of booking could include a recommendation on using some ear drops to soften the wax for easy cleaning, before the appointment. I was luckily not affected, and my wax came out easy.
Couldn’t feel a thing when the needle went through my arm 👏
I was in and out very quickly and the best thing is..... I CAN HEAR AGAIN.
Hopefully I won't need it again but if I do I'd definitely return here.
Highly recommend flue jab done for another year great service
In fact, we agree that from now on, the lady deserves to be respectfully referred to as "Jabber Julie".
Yours, Sylvia & Richard Manning.

Want to say a huge thank you for all your help Jirina with the whole process.
Thanks to all at VSM Pharmacy.
Highly recommend this company.☺️
cy.
The other staff I spoke to were also friendly and professional.
In November after I had a cold during a holiday I suffered painful ear pressure on the return flight. As the symptons were similar to those in August I went back to VSM. They confirmed there was very little wax in the ear and that it was simply my cold giving me ear pressure problems. Instead of having the pay the full fee for cleaning they just charged me a nominal check up fee which I appreciated.
Overall I would highly recommend them.
Staff were very pleasant and understanding.
VSM Pharmacy treated my problem professionally and book me in the same day. The lady who treated me was very kind and explained everything completely. I cannot speak too highly for the service I got. I would recommend this place to anyone.
I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
5stars
No waiting about, straight in answered a few questions, operation done, out....
Just how I like it.
Will definitely use the again
5 star service

Of course. If you need an appointment for multiple people, please book one slot in the calendar and let us know how many people will be attending when filling in the form.
The clinician will ask you questions to assess which vaccine is the best option based on your personal circumstances, your medical history, your destination and length of travel among other things.
This will depend on the type of vaccination you require and the clinical assessment.

Vaccinations FAQs
Our clinician will determine which vaccination you need during the consultation. For more information on vaccinations per country, visit NaTHNaC.
It depends on the vaccination required. This is something that will be discussed with the clinician during the appointment. More information on children vaccination is available on the NHS Fit for Travel website.
Each vaccine is different and the pros and cons will be explained to you during the appointment. In most cases, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Any medication has the potential to cause side effects and vaccines are the same in that respect.
This is different from vaccine to vaccine and depends on a number of factor. For maximum immunity, completing the full course is recommended.
We have some paediatric vaccines for children under 16 years old.
Pricing FAQs
The price per dose is available above. Please note that some vaccines require multiple courses which are also listed in the price list above. We advertise the price per dose as some customers may have received an initial dose previously and may only require the booster or one dose to complete the course.
The consultation is free.
