What is Pepto Bismol?
It’s a treatment you can buy over-the counter without a prescription for stomach problems. It contains an ingredient called bismuth subsalicylate which coats the stomach and intestines and gives relieve from digestive problems.
Why Should I Use It?
It’s handy to have in your medicine cabinet because it relieves 5 different types of digestive symptoms. It also means you don’t need to buy separate treatments for each digestive problem. The types of digestive problems you can treat with Pepto Bismol include:
Indigestion
You get indigestion when the acid from your stomach irritates your stomach lining or your throat. Acid reflux is also a symptoms caused by stomach acid. Common causes of indigestion are:
- eating fatty or spicy food
- drinking coffee or alcohol
- smoking
- being overweight
Anxiety and stress can also cause indigestion as well as pregnancy and taking anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. A stomach ulcer or a hiatus hernia can also cause indigestion.
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is either caused by a virus, bacteria from contaminated food or by a parasite from contaminated water. The most common condition that causes diarrhoea is gastroenteritis which is a tummy bug caused by bacteria or a virus.
The condition usually clears up without the need to visit the doctor unless you have signs of dehydration, green vomit or blood in your poo. Stay at home if you have diarrhoea, you might be contagious for 48 hours or more.
Heartburn
Heartburn causes a burning feeling in the middle of your chest. It is caused by stomach acid, and it is caused by the same factors as indigestion.
Upset stomach
An upset stomach is often caused by something you have eaten. It could be caused because you have an intolerance to certain foods, or you have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Anxiety can also upset your stomach and put you off eating.
Nausea
If you are feeling sick it could be caused by acid reflux. Take Pepto Bismol to relieve the symptoms. It is recommended if you are feeling nauseous to eat small quantities of food and drink peppermint or ginger tea.
Can anyone use Pepto Bismol?
It’s only suitable for people of 16 and over. You shouldn’t take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You should also tell us here at the pharmacy if you have the following:
- You’ve had an allergic reaction to aspirin or another medicine in the past
- You have a blood clotting disorder
- You have gout or diabetes
- You are allergic to the colouring amaranth
- You cannot have aspartame because you have phenylketonuria
What is Phenylketonuria?
It is a serious inherited condition which means the body cannot break down an amino acid called phenylalanine. If the condition isn’t treated it can lead to brain damage. Normally newborn babies are tested for phenylketonuria when they have blood taken from their heel at around 5 days old.
How about Amaranth?
Amaranth is used as a red dye known as E123. It is used in food, cosmetics and some medicines. People who allergic to amaranth may suffer from asthma, hay fever symptoms or skin rashes.
How do I take Pepto Bismol?
You can take up to 8 doses of Pepto Bismol liquid or 16 tablets in 24 hours. Each dose is 30ml or 2 tablets and you can repeat the dose every 30-60 minutes.
You shouldn’t take it for more than 2 days because otherwise you risk side-effects such as dizziness, fatigue or problems with your ears.
