Did you know that here at VSM Pharmacy we have a travel clinic? You can have the vaccines you need for your holiday or business trip. We’ll give you vaccination advice tailored to your travel itinerary.
One of the vaccines we offer is Yellow Fever. In some countries, you will need the Yellow Fever vaccination. In other countries, you will need a Yellow Fever Certificate. This is to show that you have already had the vaccine.
What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow Fever is a visus that is passed on by infected mosquitos. The infected mosquitos are mainly found in tropical countries in Africa and South America. For instance, in Brazil, Peru, Nigeria and Kenya it is recommended that travellers have a Yellow Fever Vaccine.
What are the symptoms?
If an infected mosquito bites you and you get the virus, you might feel like you have flu. You could have a temperature, feel sick, have a headache and generally feel ill. You’ll usually feel like this for around 3 or 4 days.
Some people begin to feel better but then take a turn for the worse. If you have any of the following symptoms you will need to get medical help immediately:
- Stomach Pain
- Jaundice (yellowish skin and eyes)
- Dark urine
- Blood in your poo or your vomit
- Bleeding from your stomach, nose, eyes or mouth
What treatments are there for Yellow Fever?
There isn’t a treatment as such for yellow fever because most people get better in a few days. You should rest, drink plenty of fluids without caffeine and take paracetamol or ibuprofen.
When I am abroad how can I protect myself?
The best way to protect yourself is to have a Yellow Fever Vaccination.
When you are outside in the morning and early evening wear trousers and tops or shirts with long sleeves. Spray your skin with insect repellent. The best repellents are those that contain DEET.
When you are inside keep doors and windows shut unless you have mosquito/insect screens installed. At night sleep under a mosquito net, but first treat it with insect repellent.
Where can I have a Yellow Fever vaccination?
Our travel clinic offers the Yellow Fever Vaccine. You only need one dose which must be given at least 2 weeks before you travel. We will also give you a Yellow Fever Certificate so that you can present this when you travel in the future. Currently (June 2024) the price for the vaccination is £69.99.
Can anyone receive the vaccination?
The vaccine is suitable from 9 months old.
What do I need to do to get an appointment?
All you need to do is pop in to make an appointment with a member of staff. Or you can give us a call on 01276 21002 or send us an email using the contact form online.
How long is the appointment?
The appointment will take about 30 minutes. This is because we will need to take some details. You’ll also have to fill in a questionnaire. We do this to make sure you are getting all the vaccinations you need for your trip.
Where do I get information about Yellow Fever and the countries that are affected?
You can log into the Travel Health Pro website. Search for a country or a virus or bacteria and you can read the information online.
